Chapter 27

Kai completed his research paper on the zippchondrial virus and immediately sent it off to the university, and to several colleagues. His lab director called him.

“Kai, we need to get this out worldwide so people can duplicate your findings as soon as possible. Maybe someone can then work on an antidote - this is Nobel work. I’ve talked to Mark at the Journal of Microbiology and Fred at the International Journal of Public Medicine and they’re going to publication with this. I want your permission to publish it online as well - it has to get out there.”

“I think you’re right. Be certain Zyanya gets listed as well as the University department.”

Kai hung up the phone and thought a moment. Then he sent copies of his findings to colleagues at other universities. He considered some more and sent it on to friends in different countries.

Within a day, Kai’s inbox was flooded. All over the scholarly and medical world, people were repeating his tests with the same results. Everyone was agreeing it looked like a man made viral attack. The difficulty was in isolating and finding a way to destroy it without destroying host cells. The other problem was more immediate; someone had to take the blame for the attack and governments all over the world were lining up to point fingers at likely suspects. World distrust got worse fast.

Kai was working in the garden with his folks when Gabriel came up with a worried expression on his face.

“Kai, someone is here – a couple suits - and they want to talk to you. I’ve got Zyanya and baby in the back of the lower forty, so to speak. I sent three of the wolf pack to stay with her. These guys don’t look too happy.”

Dad and Kai went up to the front porch. There were three suits sitting there.

With no preamble, no niceties, the first one spoke.

“You’re Dr. Kaidante Oberllyn?” he seemed to be looking down his nose at Kai who was dressed in jeans, nikes, a choker, no shirt, hair braided back and down his back. He had a tan a surfer would be proud of. He also had several scars scattered like a map of all his past fights on shoulders and arms and one on his ribs.

“Yes, I am. I’ve just come up from gardening. Exercise is good to clear your mind.”

“I wouldn’t know about that but I do know that you’re run afoul of national security.”

“Excuse me?”

“That paper you wrote about viruses has gone viral itself. It’s caused embarrassment for the government. We had no idea this research was going on and on a farm! Is the lab in the barn next to the meth factory?”

“What meth factory?” Mom growled as she came up with Fiona, a 140 pound cream Irish wolfhound. “And just who are you anyway? Let’s see some identification before I have to have you escorted off our retreat center grounds.”

“You must be Mrs. Oberllyn. I’ve read about you.” He scowled at her as he took out his badge and flashed it.
